Before visiting Umpqua Hot Springs, here are some important things to know:
Nudity: Nudity is allowed at this hot springs so be prepared, when we went there was one dude just there naked walking around. So keep that in mind if you were thinking of bringing children.
Upper pools are the hottest: When you pop out from the trail the pools right by the TH are the hottest and as you descend down they become cooler. I was there in April and the lowest pool was not even lukewarm.
Trash bags: Honestly the most trash I’ve ever seen out in the woods is typically hot springs, so if you’d like to help clean up the area you can bring a trash bag and a pair of gloves. I also bring a dry bag or trash bag to put my towel and bathing suit in after I leave the springs.
Sturdy shoes – There is a bit of a steep incline to get to the hot springs, I wore my sturdy hiking boots and crocs so I could slip out of the springs easily. Wearing crocs or sandals also helps your feet from getting too cold walking around (if you are visiting during the cooler months).
Loose clothes and towel: I always wear sweatpants and a loose shirt to hot springs to make it easy to change into after the hot springs.
Trail Conditions: Check current trail conditions and accessibility, especially during winter months when snow and ice may affect the trail.
Weather: Be prepared for changing weather conditions, as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Bring appropriate clothing and gear for the season. It started raining when we were at the hot springs.
Parking: The parking area at the Umpqua Hot Springs Trailhead can fill up quickly, especially during peak times. Arrive early or consider visiting on weekdays to secure parking.
Trail Difficulty: The hike to Umpqua Hot Springs is relatively short but can be steep and rocky in some sections. Wear sturdy footwear and take caution, especially if hiking with children or pets.
