Your Guide to Backpacking the Kalalau Trail – Na Pali Coast

Imagine a place where towering emerald cliffs meet the vast blue ocean, with cascading waterfalls and secluded beaches adding a touch of magic. Welcome to the Nā Pali Coast of Kaua’i, Hawaii—a paradise that seems straight out of a dream!

The Nā Pali Coast stretches over 17 miles along the northwest shore of Kaua’i, boasting some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world. The name “Nā Pali” means “the cliffs” in Hawaiian, and it’s easy to see why. These sheer, rugged cliffs rise up to 4,000 feet above the Pacific, creating a stunning backdrop for the vibrant, turquoise waters below.

Now, let’s dive into a bit of history. Long before Instagram travelers and adventurous hikers discovered this gem, the ancient Hawaiians thrived here. They lived in isolated valleys, fishing, farming, and trading along the coastline. The remnants of their villages, including terraces and heiau (temples), still dot the landscape, whispering tales of a bygone era.

The coast’s inaccessibility by road has kept it relatively untouched, preserving its pristine beauty. Today, the Nā Pali Coast is a haven for adventurers and nature lovers. You can explore it by hiking the famous Kalalau Trail, embarking on a boat tour, or soaring above in a helicopter for a bird’s-eye view. Where is the Kalalau Trail

The Nā Pali Coast is located on the northwest shore of Kaua’i, which is one of the Hawaiian Islands. Kaua’i, often referred to as the “Garden Isle” due to its lush tropical landscape, is the fourth largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. The Nā Pali Coast stretches for approximately 17 miles along this part of the island, showcasing its dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, and pristine beaches.

The Kalalau Trail is located on the Nā Pali Coast of Kaua’i, Hawaii. It begins at Ke’e Beach and extends for 11 miles, ending at Kalalau Beach. This trail is the only land access to the rugged Nā Pali Coast, winding through lush valleys, towering cliffs, and offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s a challenging hike but rewards adventurers with stunning scenery and a sense of remote wilderness.

How to get to Kalalau Trail

To embark on your journey to the Kalalau Trail on the Nā Pali Coast, you’ll first need to get to Kaua’i. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make this happen:

Getting to Kaua’i

Fly to Lihue Airport (LIH):

The primary airport on Kaua’i is Lihue Airport, located on the southeastern side of the island. You can find direct flights to Lihue from several major airports in the United States, particularly from the West Coast, such as Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), and Seattle (SEA). There are also inter-island flights from Honolulu (HNL) if you’re coming from another Hawaiian island.

Getting to the Kalalau Trail

Rent a Car:

Once you arrive at Lihue Airport, renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the island and get to the trailhead. Several car rental agencies operate at the airport.

Drive to Ke’e Beach:

The Kalalau Trail begins at Ke’e Beach, which is located at the end of Highway 560 (Kuhio Highway) on the north shore of Kaua’i. The drive from Lihue Airport to Ke’e Beach takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The route takes you through scenic landscapes, including Hanalei Bay and other charming spots along the north shore.

Parking at Ke’e Beach:

Parking at Ke’e Beach can be limited, so it’s a good idea to arrive early, especially if you’re planning a day hike or starting the full Kalalau Trail.

How to Obtain a Permit

Permits are open 90 days in advance only online here. When I applied for the permit (2024), it opened at 12am HST and the permits were gone fast. Once you obtain your permits and you’d like to park at Hāʻena State Park, you should head over to get a parking permit right afterwards.

Tips to obtain a permit

  1. Be flexible with dates: the first day we attempted and weren’t able to snag any, but the second day we luckily got it! So being flexible really helped us.
  2. Power in numbers: the more people trying for the permit, the better, myself and my friend were both on the website ready to go, but if you have more people joining, the better.
  3. Make sure you already created your account and login in prior to 12am HST, I have heard being on a computer can make things easier as well.
  4. You can also try for off season (April to May); however, the weather will be more unpredictable and the trail conditions with the rain will be more treacherous.

Best Time to Backpack the Kalalau Trail

The best time of year to hike the Kalalau Trail is during the dry season, which generally runs from May to September. Here’s why this period is ideal:

Dry Season (May to September)

This is the season that I backpacking the Kalalau trail (June 2024) and the weather was ideal. It lightly rained our first day for about an hour and then turned very windy by crawler’s ledge, but other than that it was clear and sunny. The trail conditions were also great, no mud!

  • Weather Conditions: During the dry season, the weather is typically more stable, with less rainfall. This reduces the risk of slippery trails, mud, and dangerous stream crossings.
  • Trail Accessibility: The drier conditions make the trail more accessible and less hazardous, providing a safer and more enjoyable hiking experience.
  • Clear Views: The clear skies during the dry season offer stunning, unobstructed views of the Nā Pali Coast’s majestic cliffs, lush valleys, and the vast Pacific Ocean.

Considerations for the Dry Season

Heat: Be prepared for hotter temperatures and stronger sun exposure. Bring plenty of water, wear sun protection, and take breaks in shaded areas.

Crowds: This is the peak hiking season, so the trail can be more crowded. Plan ahead and secure permits and accommodations early.

Shoulder Seasons (April and October)

  • Mild Weather: The shoulder seasons can also be a good time to hike, with generally mild weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak dry season.
  • Potential Rain: There is a higher chance of rain compared to the dry season, but conditions are usually still manageable.

Wet Season (November to March)

  • Heavy Rainfall: The wet season brings more frequent and intense rainfall, making the trail slippery and dangerous. Stream crossings can become treacherous, and the risk of flash floods increases.
  • Trail Closures: Parts of the trail may be closed due to hazardous conditions.

Summary:

Best Time: May to September (dry season) for the safest and most enjoyable experience.

Good Alternatives: April and October (shoulder seasons) for milder weather and fewer crowds.

Avoid: November to March (wet season) due to increased risks and potential trail closures.

Gear Guide

Backpacking the Kalalau Trail requires careful preparation and packing. Here’s a comprehensive list of what to bring to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure:

Essential Gear

Backpack: A durable, comfortable backpack with a capacity of 50-70 liters.

Tent: Lightweight, waterproof tent suitable for tropical conditions. This is also a great option. If you want something a more budget friendly tent.

Sleeping Bag and Pad: Lightweight, compact sleeping bag rated for tropical temperatures, I just used my rumpl instead of a sleeping bag and was completely fine! Sleeping pad for comfort and insulation, I would not cheap out on a sleeping pad. Years ago, I did and I saved up for a nicer sleeping pad and it has made a HUGE difference to me (especially since I have a tough time sleeping in general).

Hiking Clothes

Moisture-wicking, quick-dry shirts

Lightweight, long-sleeve shirt and pants for sun and insect protection. I opted to wear my sun hoodie and REI shorts, but these hiking pants would be a great option as well.

 Rain jacket: Lightweight rain jacket in case the forecast calls for rain, I brought one and didn’t have to use it at all, but you never know with the weather so it’s always good to have one with you!

Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes. I opted for my Oboz because of all the potential mud and stream crossings. Wool/synthetic socks. And lightweight camp shoes or sandals for hanging around the beach/camp.

Food and Water

Safety and Navigation

  • Permits: Printed copies of your camping permits and parking permit if you are parking at the trailhead.
  • Navigation: Map of the Kalalau Trail. Parts of the trail are a little tricky to navigate so make sure you have a the trail details downloaded and/or a physical map.
  • GPS device
  • First Aid Kit: Comprehensive first aid kit including bandages, antiseptic, blister treatment, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
  • Multi-tool or Knife: For various tasks and emergencies.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight: With extra batteries.

Personal Items

  • Biodegradable soap and toothpaste.
  • Toothbrush
  • toilet paper: personally I like to bring my kula cloth and wet wipes, I bring a small trash bag to carry the wet ones and any other trash out.
  • hand sanitizer.
  • Small trowel for digging catholes (for bathroom needs).
  • Camera or Smartphone: For capturing the stunning scenery (ensure it’s waterproof or has a protective case).
  • Powerbank

Optional Items:

  • Book or Kindle
  • Frisbee

Things to Know Before You Go

Before embarking on the Kalalau Trail, it’s crucial to be well-prepared and informed. Here are key things to know before you go:

Permits and Regulations

  • Overnight Camping: Permits are required for camping beyond Hanakāpī‘ai Beach. Obtain them from the DLNR website well in advance.
  • Arrange transportation to and from the trailhead at Ke’e Beach. Parking is limited and requires a reservation. Also, I would not leave anything in your rental car. If you are staying at a hotel the day you get off the trail, call them and ask if you can store your stuff there. Many people have had their cars broken into and siphoning gas is also very common so be aware of this. We dropped our bags off at the hotel (we stopped there at 5am and left the bags there for 4 days).
  • Day Hikes: No permit is required for day hikes to Hanakāpī‘ai Beach or Hanakāpī‘ai Falls.
  • Regulations:**
  •  Pack In, Pack Out: Leave no trace. Carry out all trash, and do not leave any waste behind. We saw people literally leave all their belongings behind (tent, sleeping bags, fuel, etc.). Bags of trash…don’t be these people.
  •    Fire Restrictions: Open fires are not permitted. Use portable stoves for cooking.
  •   Respect Wildlife: Do not disturb or feed wildlife. You will potentially see goats, cats, feral pigs.
  • The Kalalau Trail is strenuous and includes steep inclines, narrow paths, and challenging terrain. It is not recommended for inexperienced hikers.
  • The trail can be treacherous during and after heavy rains due to slippery conditions and swollen streams. Check the weather forecast and trail conditions before starting your hike.
  • Be cautious when crossing streams, especially after rain. Swift currents can be dangerous. If in doubt, wait until the water level lowers.
  • Bring enough water and a means to purify additional water from streams. Carry sufficient food for the duration of your hike.
  • Carry a well-stocked first aid kit and know basic first aid procedures.
  • Cell service is limited or non-existent on the trail. Inform someone of your itinerary and expected return date.
  • It’s safer to hike with a partner or in a group, especially in case of emergencies.
  • Ensure you are in good physical condition. The trail requires stamina and strength.
  • Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good grip. Bring appropriate clothing for varying weather conditions.
  • Carry a map and compass or GPS. Familiarize yourself with the trail route.
  • Be aware of native plants and wildlife. Some plants, like taro, can be toxic if not prepared properly.
  • Cultural Respect:The trail passes through areas of cultural and historical significance to Native Hawaiians. Respect archaeological sites and cultural practices.
  • ### Timing and Logistics
  • Start your hike early to make the most of daylight and avoid the heat of the day.
  • Have a plan in place for emergencies, including knowing the locations of potential evacuation points.

By keeping these important factors in mind, you’ll be well-prepared for the adventure and challenges of the Kalalau Trail, ensuring a safe and memorable experience.

My 4-Day Backpacking Itinerary

Here’s a detailed 4-day itinerary from my backpacking trip on the Kalalau Trail:

Day 1: Ke’e Beach to Kalalau Beach (11 miles)

Morning: Arrive at Ke’e Beach early (at 6:30 AM) to secure parking and begin your hike.

Hike to Hanakāpī‘ai Beach (2 miles):The first segment of the trail is relatively moderate with scenic coastal views. Take a short break at Hanakāpī‘ai Beach. There is no water from mile 2 to 6 (at least during the dry season). Ensure you have enough water.

Afternoon: Continue to Hanakoa Valley (4 miles): This segment is more challenging with steep climbs and descents. Take breaks and stay hydrated.

Lunch Break: Have lunch in Hanakoa Valley, where you can also refill your water (purify it).

Afternoon: Hanakoa Valley to Kalalau Beach (5 miles): The final stretch to Kalalau Beach offers some of the most spectacular views of the Nā Pali Coast. Pace yourself and enjoy the scenery. At mile 7 is where Crawler’s Ledge begins (pictured below). This is where many people decide to turn around due to the steep drop off and narrow path. We took our times descending down especially since the wind was pushing us around during the afternoon. Just be cautious.

Arrive at Kalalau Beach: Set up camp, relax, and enjoy the sunset on the beautiful beach.

Day 2: Relax and Explore Kalalau Beach

Rest Day: Spend the day relaxing and recovering from the strenuous hike.

Explore: Visit Kalalau Valley, swim in the ocean, or explore nearby waterfalls and caves. Enjoy the Scenery: Take in the stunning views and peaceful environment of Kalalau Beach.

Day 3: Kalalau Beach to Hanakoa Valley (6 miles)

Early Start: Pack up camp at 5am and start your hike back to Hanakoa Valley. This was the perfect time to avoid the sun, most of the hike was shaded.

Hike to Hanakoa Valley: The 6-mile hike should be familiar but still challenging. Take breaks and enjoy the views along the way.

Afternoon: Arrive at Hanakoa Valley: Set up camp, rest, and explore the area. Make sure to refill and purify your water. Head out to the waterfall, we enjoyed a secluded 3 hour break at this waterfall!

Relax: Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the final day of hiking.

Day 4: Hanakoa Valley to Ke’e Beach (6 miles)

Early Departure: Start your hike early at 5am for some cooler weather and avoid the sun in the beginning. The first two miles from the trailhead are super busy so starting early will allow you to not hit the most busy time of day.

Hanakoa Valley to Hanakāpī‘ai Beach (4 miles): This segment is challenging, so pace yourself and take breaks.

Afternoon: Lunch Break at Hanakāpī‘ai Beach. Rest and refuel at Hanakāpī‘ai Beach before the final stretch.

Hanakāpī‘ai Beach to Ke’e Beach (2 miles): The last segment is moderate but can feel long after several days of hiking. Push through and enjoy the satisfaction of completing the trail.

Grab food and celebrate! Arrive back at Ke’e Beach and celebrate your successful hike of the Kalalau Trail.

Where to Grab Food

Here’s a list of spots in Hanalei where you should grab food!

  • Kalypso Island Bar & Grill:: Offers a diverse menu including burgers, seafood, and salads in a casual setting.
  • Wishing Well Shave Ice: Known for their delicious shaved ice treats, perfect for a refreshing snack. Or if the line is too long, stop at JoJo’s for shaved ice!
  • Nourish Hanalei: A health-conscious cafe offering smoothies, salads, and bowls made with fresh, local ingredients – also the view isn’t half bad!
  • Tahiti Nui: Famous for Hawaiian cuisine and a relaxed atmosphere, often featuring live music.
  • Aloha Juice Bar: Offers fresh juices, smoothies, and acai bowls, ideal for a quick and healthy meal. Get the dole whip!

Backpacking the Kalalau Trail on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast is an adventure that promises breathtaking scenery and a true sense of wilderness.
