Pre-Travel Essentials Q&A
Q: Do I need a visa to travel to Tanzania?
A: Yes, U.S. citizens need a tourist visa to enter Tanzania. You can obtain a single-entry visa for $50 or a multiple-entry visa for $100, valid for 12 months. The visa can be applied for online via the Tanzania eVisa portal.
Q: Is travel insurance required for this trip?
A: While not mandatory for mainland Tanzania, it is highly recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance. This should cover medical expenses, trip cancellations, and other unexpected events. It’s important to note that many U.S. health insurance plans do not cover international travel, so securing travel insurance is a smart move.
Q: What vaccinations are required for travel to Tanzania?
A: If you’re traveling from a country with risk of yellow fever, proof of vaccination is required. However, if you are coming directly from the United States, it’s not required unless you transit through a yellow fever-endemic country. The CDC also recommends vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, and malaria. Be sure to consult with your doctor before traveling.
Q: Are there payment plans available for booking the trip?
A: Yes, Shiri Advenutres offers flexible payment plans for both the Mount Kilimanjaro trek and the Safari Adventure. You can also pay the deposit in two installments (10% and then the remaining 10%). Please reach out to Shiri Adventures directly to discuss personalized payment schedules that work for you. Or if you’d prefer you can DM me on Instagram or email at OutdoorBrooke@gmail.com!
Q: I would like to go on both trek and safari, will I have to put down two deposits?
A: No, just one deposit! Book here, this will allow you to put down just one deposit!
Q: What airport do I fly into for the Mount Kilimanjaro trek?
A: You will fly into Kilimanajaro International Airport (JRO), which is located near Arusha, Tanzania.
Q: Can I arrive a day or so early?
A: Yes, you can arrive early. Additional accommodation can be arranged at an extra cost. Please contact Shiri Adventures to coordinate early arrival plans.
Q: What is the cancellation/refund policy?
A: The cancellation and refund policies are provided by Shiri Adventures. They recommend obtaining comprehensive travel insurance to cover unforeseen events such as illness or flight cancellations. For more details on their specific policy, please visit their website or contact them directly.
Q: What is the best way to exchange money in Tanzania?
A: You can exchange money at the airport or Shiri Advenutres will stop at locations to allow us to exchange money. Be sure to check the exchange rates beforehand.
Q: How do I pack for both the mountain trek and the safari?
A: For the trek, pack lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors, sturdy hiking boots, and essential gear such as a headlamp, water bottle, and gloves. For the safari, include comfortable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera. Since luggage space is limited, it’s important to pack light and focus on the essentials. When we return to the hotel, they do offer laundry services, which I will be utilizing after our summit and I recommend you do as well!
Q: Can I fly a drone in national parks like Serengeti and Ngorongoro?
A: Not without permission. Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) strictly regulates drone use in protected areas. You’ll need to secure multiple permits including from the Film Board, Ministry of Defense, TCAA, and TANAPA’s Conservation Commissioner to operate legally. So I would suggest just leaving it at home and maybe just add the hot air balloon option when you sign up!
Q&A – Mount Kilimanjaro Trek
Q: Is the Kilimanjaro trek suitable for beginners?
A: Yes! The Lemosho Route is considered one of the most scenic and less challenging routes for beginners. With proper training and preparation, climbers of all skill levels can tackle this incredible challenge.
Q: Do I need special gear for the trek?
A: Yes, you’ll need to have essential hiking gear, such as proper footwear, warm clothes, and a sleeping bag. Don’t worry, Shiri Adventures will provide a list of all required gear after booking!
Q: How do I prepare for the trek?
A: I would recommend regular hiking, cardio, and strength training leading up to the trip. Shiri Adventures is also available for fitness tips and advice.
Q: What is the altitude like?
A: Mount Kilimanjaro reaches 19,341 feet. To ensure safe acclimatization, the Lemosho Route offers a gradual ascent, allowing you time to adjust to the altitude.
Q: Is it solo-friendly?
A: Yes, absolutely!
Q: What is the group size for the trek?
A: Groups typically consist of 6–12 people. The max is around 20 people, but I don’t foresee that happening!
Q: What is the success rate for summiting Mount Kilimanjaro?
A: The success rate for summiting Mount Kilimanjaro is approximately 98% on the 8 day Lemosho route, which is one of the best routes for acclimatization.
Q: How do I prepare for altitude and acclimatization?
A: Proper acclimatization is key to a successful summit. Shiri Adventures recommends a gradual ascent, staying hydrated, and maintaining a steady pace. Avoiding excessive caffeine or alcohol is also advised as they can cause dehydration. We will have our expert guides with us to help along the way!
Q: What happens if I get altitude sickness or can’t continue?
A: If you experience altitude sickness or are unable to continue, the guide will assess the situation. In severe cases, a descent to a lower altitude may be necessary for recovery. It’s important to inform your guide immediately if you begin experiencing symptoms.

A: Climbers will camp in tents along the route. Each climber will have a duffel bag with their gear, which is carried by porters, and will carry their own daypack during the trek. If you are a solo-traveler they will pair you up with the same sex in a tent or you can contact Shiri Adventures if you’d prefer not to share.

A: Basic toilet facilities are available at each campsite. Climbers are advised to bring their own toilet paper and hand sanitizers as a precaution.

A: The safari package includes luxurious accommodations, all park entrance fees, game drives, and meals. You’ll visit the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park, experiencing Africa’s wildlife in style!
Q: What should I pack for the safari?
A: I recommend packing lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors (preferably wool or synthetic). Avoid bright colors and dark blues or blacks, as they attract tsetse flies. A light jacket or fleece for cooler evenings is also advisable. Comfortable, sturdy shoes are essential for walking safaris and game drives. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect from the sun. You can check out my post here and shop here for gear and clothing I brought in 2024!
Q: Can I pack a lot of gear for the safari?
A: I recommend packing light to keep your bags manageable. Limited luggage space is available, so focus on the essentials: lightweight clothes, durable footwear, sunscreen, a camera, and personal items. Pack efficiently, but avoid overpacking. The tented lodge will have laundry services (however, you will need to have cash on hand, they do not accept credit cards).
Q: How much should I tip the safari staff?
A: Tipping is customary for safari staff, and it’s a way to show appreciation for their excellent service. The Shiri Adventures crew is absolutely amazing.
- Safari Guides: Tip $8–$10 per guest per day.
- Lodge Staff: Tip $2–$5 per guest per day.
Q: Is it solo-friendly?
A: Absolutely! My friend, Amanda, who hosted the safari trip I joined was primarily solo travelers!
Q: Is the safari experience family-friendly?
A: Absolutely! This safari is perfect for families, solo travelers, and groups alike. It’s designed to provide an incredible wildlife experience for all ages.

A: During the safari, you can expect to see a wide variety of animals, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and various species of antelope, as well as many types of birds.
Q: Will we see the “Big Five” on the safari?
A: The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are prime spots for seeing lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes. You’ll be in prime wildlife territory. In 2024, I saw 4 of the Big Five, while another jeep saw all five!
Q: Are there any age restrictions for the safari?
A: The safari is suitable for all ages, though some walking or trekking may be required. I recommend checking with Shiri directly if traveling with young children or older adults.
